Radiation Physics and Principles of Radiation Protection

prof. Maurizio Angelone

Program

The course aims to introduce the student to the physics of radiations (charged particles, neutrons and EM radiation) and their interactions with matter with particular reference to the physical processes that are of interest for radiation dosimetry.

The concepts of absorbed dose as well as of other dosimetric quantities derived from it, as defined by ICRP, and of current application in radiation protection will then be presented and discussed.

Furthermore, after having introduced the basic concepts underlying radiation shielding, with greater emphasis on neutron and gamma shielding, we will examine the basic instrumentation for radiation protection as well as the experimental methodologies for the measurement of the various operational dosimetric quantities with nods to environmental monitoring and radon measurement.
