Additive Manufacturing Lab

prof. Leandro Iorio

Program

The course aims at providing the fundamental competences to approach design and fabrication of discrete parts by layer-by-layer deposition. Moreover, it allows using additive manufacturing facilities of the Department laboratories and related accessory equipment. The final target is making students independent in manufacturing of spare parts and enhancing their designing capabilities. The course is almost entirely taken in laboratory apart from CAD activities and small theoretical lessons on 3d printing technologies for plastics, metals and ceramics. The laboratory experiments are mainly carried out by filament deposition modelling (FDM) apart possible actions on filament extrusion and part testing. The course is mainly structured in 8 activities:

  1. Basic knowledge in FDM
  2. 3d CAD modelling of parts for additive manufacturing.
  3. Slicing and support structures generation
  4. Filament extrusion
  5. 3d printing machine set-up
  6. Manufacturing of simple shapes
  7. Testing of manufactured samples: surface and material properties
  8. Extension to other additive manufacturing techniques
